Newly Ordained Deacon Assigned to St. Andrew Parish

Deacon Kevin Kayda (on the left)

Today, Bishop McFadden assigned newly ordained transitional deacon Kevin Kayda to Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish for the summer - and throughout the coming school year.  For those of you who keep up with the blog - you've got first notice!  I'll be getting information from Deacon Kayda and will put more information on the blog and in the bulletin in the near future.  In the meantime - WELCOME, Deacon Kayda, to the Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Family!

Deacon Mark Wilke

On Saturday, May 19, 5 men were ordained Deacons for our Diocese.  Two of them, Matt Larlick and Mark Wilke, have been assigned to Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish in the summer.  Congratulations to them all!  Here's a photo I received of the Skehan family (most of them) and the Barvir's after the ordination.

Great Start to Chaplain School

As many probably know, on Sunday I left Waynesboro for 6 more weeks of military training at Fort Jackson, S.C. for the Air Force Basic Chaplain Course.  It's NOTHING like Commissioned Officer Training (which I attended in January/February).  This time we have our own rooms in a hotel environment, the "duty day" begins with Mass at 0730, and ends about 1630 or 1700.  PT is on our own (instead of being marched down to the PT pad).  There are 18 in our class - all fine men (interestingly, all men) who are all Christian chaplains.  So far, it's great!

On day one, we had a unique opportunity, Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Roy (the highest ranking enlisted man who provides direction for the enlisted force and represents their interests, as appropriate, to the American public, and to those in all levels of government. He serves as the personal adviser to the Chief of Staff and the Secretary of the Air Force on all issues regarding the welfare, readiness, morale, and proper utilization and progress of the enlisted force) stopped by the college to visit and talk with us.  What a great honor.  We hear there will be many other "DV's" (Distinguished Visitors) as the weeks go by.

I've got a little more time this time - so I'll try to blog and let you know what's going on here at chaplain School.

Early "Graduation Photo" for St. Andrew Class of 2012

At the end of Mass today, Father Bateman called forward the class of 2012 - because today was his last Mass with them this year.  Since Father will be away for Chaplain training with the U.S. Air Force from May 13-June 23, he'll miss their graduation.  So, this is an early "graduation photo" for the Class of 2012.
